Sitter/Title: Unknown Royalist in a Cuirass possibly Sir John Cremer (d.c.1667/8) Qualifier: attributed to Artist(s): Sir Anthony van Dyck Medium: oil on canvas Credit line: © National Trust Images / National Portrait Gallery, London Measurements: 725 x 582 mm (Sight Size) 970 x 848 mm (Whole Object) Caption: Oil painting on canvas, Unknown Royalist in a Cuirass possibly Sir John Cremer (d.c.1667/8). Painted oval. Half-length portrait of a man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a breastplate, white lace cravat and red and white sleeves. One of the finest portraits from Beeston. It dates from the 1650s, and the blue-and-gold sash suggests that the sitter had taken service with the Dutch, after the failure of the Royalist cause.
